What Trying a New Skill Taught Me

Hola, Unfxcked Freelancer👋🏼!

Welcome to another week of getting unstuck, taking control, and going pro as a freelancer. In case you missed my last newsletter, see the full archive of previous issues here.

Last week, something exciting happened.

I landed a gig to help a client publish their book on Amazon Kindle.

Although I’m no stranger to eBook publishing, this was my first time formatting for Kindle.

At first, I thought: “Can I really do this?”

I had serious doubts.

But with my years of freelancing experience, I’ve learned that taking risks can be the best teacher.

So, I started working on the project.

And it took me completely out of my comfort zone.

It was challenging and thrilling!

But here’s the gist: every new experience comes with valuable lessons, and I’m here to share them with you.

So, what did this experience teach me and what can you learn from it?

Grab your favorite drink, find a comfortable spot, and let’s dive right in.

5 Important Lessons Learned

1: Embrace the Unknown

Learning Kindle publishing skills was really intimidating for me. But I was quick to remember that the unknown isn’t as scary as it seems. In fact, it’s where growth and learning happen. Don’t be afraid to take on projects that push your boundaries. Dive in, and you’ll be surprised at what you can achieve.

2: Learning is a Journey

The Kindle eBook formatting process for the client demanded thorough attention. Unlike PDF publications, I had to learn the ins and outs of Kindle’s standards and guidelines. The lesson here is that learning isn’t always immediate. It’s a journey, and you’ll likely encounter challenges along the way. But each challenge is an opportunity to grow.

3: Persistence Pays Off

I mentioned earlier that I had doubts about the project at first. But what helped me was that I kept pushing forward. Busy mornings. Late nights. Numerous revisions. All these, and I got the eBook ready for publication. By the end of the day, I not only satisfied my client but also expanded my skillset.

4: Don’t Joke With Adaptability

Being adaptable and willing to learn new skills can open up unexpected opportunities. With this new skill, I can still make money as a freelance Kindle eBook publisher if I’m unable to make money as a freelance Writer or Web Developer. So, be flexible, and don’t limit yourself to what you already know.

5: Celebrate Your Wins

When that eBook went on to be reviewed on Kindle, I couldn’t help but celebrate. The client’s reaction was pure delight, even though we were waiting for it to finally be published. No matter how small or big the project, celebrate your wins. It will always keep you motivated and remind you of your capabilities.
