Why December Is the Best Time To Get New Gigs

I will begin this issue by briefly sharing two of my stories with you.

  1. In December 2021, I picked up a tech writing gig from a company because some of the company’s freelancers had gone on holiday.

  2. In December 2022, I told a client I was going on break. By the time I resumed in January, the client told me she had given the work to someone else.

Why am I telling you these stories?

I’m telling you because I want you to know that December isn’t just for Christmas. It’s also one of the best months for freelancers to land new corporate gigs.

You see, as a freelancer, one of the best times to shoot your shot and land clients is December.

Let me tell you why I said so.

1. Companies Have Budgets: Many big companies come to the end of the budget year in December. And if they have money left, they are usually desperate to spend it right. This makes them more likely to be open to working with freelancers like you, even if they haven’t considered it before.

2. Fewer Competitors: People are often in holiday mode in December. Many full-time employees are taking vacations. And some freelancers are focusing on holiday preparations. This means only a few freelancers are available to take on new work, leaving more opportunities for you.

3. Increased Urgency: Corporate people are currently in a hurry to get things done before the end of the year. They want to hire freelancers as fast as possible so that by January, everyone can get to work immediately. This means that you can expect quicker hiring decisions and shorter turnaround times for projects.

These and many more reasons make December the best time to shoot shots at potential clients and check in with past clients.

So, how do you take advantage of this opportunity?

  • Update your portfolio and proposals and make sure they are in the best shape.

  • Let your existing clients know you’re available for any additional projects they need completed before the end of the year.

  • Connect with your potential clients on LinkedIn and let them know you’re open for work.

  • Shoot shots like crazy.

The main thing is that you understand that December is a time of stress for businesses and a time of opportunity for you.

So you just have to position yourself strategically and highlight the value you can provide.

So, don’t just sit back and celebrate Christmas.

Get out there, network, shoot shots, and land those corporate gigs.
