Uncredited Work Demand Premiums

Hey — it’s Temidayo.

Today’s the last Monday of June, which kinda means we’re about to wrap up the first half of 2023.

While I find that wild, I want you to take a moment and reflect.

How are those New Year’s goals looking? Are you on track, or do you need to do better in the second half?

I’m not trying to judge you or anything. It’s just a friendly reminder that there is still time to make this year count.

That said, let’s jump into what I cooked up this week…

One thing you must never forget as a freelancer is that your portfolio is your lifeblood.

It’s basically how you showcase your skills, attract new clients, and justify your rates.

So when a client asks you to work with no public acknowledgment or to work under a non-disclosure agreement (NDA), they’re asking you to give up a valuable asset. And that, is worth charging extra for.

Think of it like this:

Let’s say you made a dress for someone. Normally, when the person posts a picture of the dress on their instagram, you get your name tagged.

But what if they said, “I love your dress, but I want people to think I made it myself”?

You’d feel a bit cheated, right?

That’s because the recognition is part of the payment.

See, working as a freelancer is not just about the money – it’s about building your reputation and expanding your business opportunities.

When you can’t add a project to your portfolio or mention it in your client list, you’re losing out on future earning potential.

That ghostwritten article or anonymous logo design might be bringing in big bucks for your client, but it’s not doing a thing for your professional growth.

So when you charge, you also need to include the opportunity cost of not being able to use that project to attract more clients down the line.

Now, I’m not saying you should never take on “ghost” work or sign NDAs…

Sometimes those kind of work can open doors to bigger things. But you need to recognize the true value of what you’re giving up and price accordingly.

So, no credit? No problem. Just make sure the pay makes up for it.

Alright, that’s it for this week.
