Why You Need To Diversify Your Skills

Hola, Unfxcked Freelancer👋🏼!

Welcome to another week of getting unstuck, taking control, and going pro as a freelancer. In case you missed my last newsletter, see the full archive of previous issues here.

In the last issue, I shared a personal experience of how I tried formatting and publishing an ebook on Amazon Kindle for the first time.

It was a new skill I had to quickly acquire for a client’s project.

I wouldn’t be able to satisfy a client and receive their payment if I didn’t acquire that skill.

You might be thinking, “I’m already good at what I do; why should I bother learning something new just to satisfy a client or get paid?”

Well, this is not about satisfying a client or getting paid.

It’s about diversifying and expanding your skill set.

So, why should you diversify?

Grab your favorite drink, find a comfortable spot, and let’s dive right in.

Why You Need to Diversify

1: Adaptability

The gig economy is ever-changing. With the rapid growth of AI technology, what clients are looking for today might not be needed tomorrow. By diversifying your skills, you can easily adapt and stay relevant in the market.

2: Risk Reduction

When you rely solely on one skill, you’re basically putting all your eggs in one basket. Trust me, you don’t want to do that. But when you diversify your skills, you reduce the risks of going broke. You’ll always have something to fall back on if one skill doesn’t bring you money anymore.

3: Expand Client Base

More skills often mean more clients and more income streams. I started as a writer, but my web development and ebook publishing skills introduced me to a whole new set of different clients with different needs. When you diversify, you simply open the door to a broader client base.

4: Personal Growth

Learning new things is empowering. I am now empowered as a result of the knowledge and skills I have acquired. Learning keeps your creative juices flowing and prevents you from burnout. When you learn a new skill and diversify, you grow and become fulfilled.

5: Less Vulnerability

An article I read on Forbes helped me realize that while we can’t predict the future, we can prepare for it. Diversifying your skills makes you less vulnerable to economic downturns and industry shifts. It’s like building a safety net, especially in this era of AI replacing humans at certain jobs.
